ParticipantLooking into Merrick and noticed they emphasize USA manufacturing and deboned meat as first ingredient. Seems like solid mid-premium brand but don’t hear it mentioned as often as Blue Buffalo or Wellness.
Is Merrick actually good quality or just flying under the radar? Prices seem reasonable for what they claim to offer.
Anyone feeding Merrick regularly? How do your cats respond? Worth trying over more popular brands?
Appreciate any feedback.
Feed Your Cat the Best with Merrick Cat Food!High-quality meals loved by cats and trusted by owners.🥇 2018+ repeat purchases in 30 days!10/24/2025 at 3:55 pm #1517PurrPlates
ParticipantBeen feeding Merrick Purrfect Bistro for over a year now and genuinely happy with results. My cat’s coat has maintained nice condition and his digestion works well on it. The grain-free formulas use real deboned meat which you can tell from the ingredient panels. Manufacturing in Texas facilities gives me more confidence than overseas production. Price point sits around $2.80 per pound which feels fair for the quality. My cat eats it enthusiastically which matters most. Vet hasn’t raised any concerns during checkups. Solid reliable choice that doesn’t get enough attention compared to flashier brands.

ParticipantTried Merrick grain-free chicken and my cat developed loose stools within a week. Switched back to her regular food and digestion normalized immediately. Not sure if it was too rich for her system or some ingredient disagreed with her specifically. Quality seemed fine based on appearance and smell. Just didn’t work for her particular digestive tolerance. Some cats handle richer foods better than others apparently.

ParticipantThe USA manufacturing appeals to me given quality control concerns with overseas pet food production. Remembering past recalls from foreign facilities makes domestic production feel safer. Planning to pick up a bag this weekend and see how my cat takes to it. Ingredient lists look comparable to more expensive brands. If the quality matches the marketing, could be good value.

ParticipantPRICING OVERVIEW:
Merrick Purrfect Bistro: $2.60-$3.20 per pound (dry)
Merrick wet food: $1.90-$2.50 per can
Blue Buffalo: $2.50-$3.00 per pound
Wellness: $2.60-$3.20 per pound
American Journey: $2.20-$2.80 per poundMerrick prices competitively within mid-premium category. Comparable to other domestic brands targeting similar market. Not budget food but not ultra-premium either. The USA manufacturing doesn’t inflate cost excessively compared to competitors. Decent value proposition for quality domestic production.

ParticipantThe variety of protein options works well for rotation feeding. They offer chicken, turkey, salmon, beef, and even venison formulas. Rotating proteins quarterly provides nutritional diversity without switching brands entirely. My cat tolerates all the proteins I’ve tried equally well. Nice having options within single brand rather than juggling multiple manufacturers.

ParticipantMerrick got acquired by Purina few years back which bothers some people. Company maintains it operates independently with same recipes and facilities. Product quality seems consistent based on my experience before and after acquisition. Some prefer supporting independent companies though. Just something to know if corporate ownership influences your purchasing decisions.

ParticipantAvailable product lines:
Purrfect Bistro: Grain-free premium line
Backcountry: High protein with freeze-dried raw coating
Classic: Traditional recipes with grains
Limited Ingredient: Simpler formulas for sensitivitiesDecent range covering different preferences and needs. I use Purrfect Bistro primarily since grain-free suits my cat. Having options means staying with Merrick through different life stages if needed.

ParticipantFor cats needing higher protein, the Backcountry line offers 40%+ protein with freeze-dried raw pieces mixed in. My young active cat does well on it. The added raw component increases palatability while boosting protein content. More expensive than regular Purrfect Bistro but serves cats with higher nutritional demands.

ParticipantMERRICK VS AMERICAN JOURNEY (both USA-made comparison)
Similar positioning as domestic brands:
Merrick advantages:
Longer established brand reputation
More flavor variety available
Better availability in specialty stores
Backcountry line for high protein needs
More premium positioning overallAmerican Journey advantages:
Lower price point generally
Exclusive to Chewy with easy ordering
Good grain-free options
Solid formulations at better value
Frequent sales and promotionsMy take: Merrick for slightly higher quality and variety. American Journey for better value with comparable nutrition. Both are legitimate USA-made options. Choice depends whether you prioritize established reputation or cost savings.

ParticipantThe wet food formulas complement their dry food nicely. Pate consistency works well as meal topper or standalone feeding. My cat finds them quite palatable. I do combination feeding with dry food available and wet food for dinner. Both maintain consistent quality. Nice not having to mix brands to get both wet and dry options.

ParticipantAvailability varies by region. More common in independent pet stores than big chains in my area. Sometimes harder to find than Blue Buffalo or Wellness which are everywhere. Worth calling stores ahead to confirm they stock it. Ordering online through Chewy works reliably if local availability is limited.

ParticipantMy senior cat transitioned to Merrick fine despite being 14 years old when we switched. The moderate protein and fat levels suit her lower activity. She maintains healthy weight and her bloodwork stays normal. Not every senior needs special senior formula if regular quality food meets their requirements. Her vet sees no reason to change what’s working.

ParticipantI started feeding my indoor cat Merrick Backcountry Wet Cat Food, and he absolutely loves it. Compared to Kirkland and Nature’s Domain, he finishes his bowls every time, and digestion is much smoother. His coat looks shinier, energy is up, and hairballs are way fewer. I sometimes mix in a little Merrick Raw Infused for variety, which keeps him excited for mealtime. Litter box odor has decreased, and overall he seems healthier. I appreciate the human grade ingredients and the small-batch feel definitely a noticeable upgrade from standard grocery brands.

ParticipantMy senior cat has been enjoying Merrick Purrfect Bistro Dry Cat Food for a few months, and the difference is clear. Energy levels are higher, digestion is smoother, and hairballs are fewer compared to Nutra Nuggets or Pure Cravings. She used to be picky, but this dry food is a hit. I sometimes add a small amount of Merrick Wet Cat Food to keep meals interesting. Coats are shinier, and litter box odor is minimal. The grain free and limited ingredient formulas are great for sensitive tummies, and I feel confident feeding something high quality and well balanced.
