ParticipantI recently grabbed a few bags of Merrick Backcountry Cat Food for my cat a mix of the dry grain-free and raw-infused wet formulas. I went with rabbit and game bird flavors, and so far, she’s been pretty interested in them, which is a big win since she’s usually picky 😹.
I’ve seen some mixed things online: some people love it, others worry about phosphorus levels or grain content. I like that it has a high protein, real-meat focus, and some of the wet pouches seem really convenient for feeding small portions.
Has anyone tried the grain-free raw-infused formulas? Or maybe the freeze-dried chicken mixer? I’m curious if it makes a big difference for picky eaters or cats with sensitive stomachs.
Also, has anyone noticed shortages or issues with availability? I’ve seen some posts about it being discontinued in certain stores, and I don’t want to be halfway through a bag if it disappears.
Would love to hear your thoughts:
- How do your cats react to it?
- Did you see any changes in energy, coat, or digestion?
- Dry vs. wet which do you prefer?
Let’s share experiences trying to see if this is a long-term keeper for my kitty! 😺

ParticipantI recently switched my cats to Merrick Backcountry Cat Food, mostly the grain-free raw-infused dry formulas in rabbit and game bird. My picky cat actually ate it right away, which was a huge relief. I also tried the wet pouches and she seems to enjoy those too. I was worried about phosphorus levels since she has a history of sensitive kidneys, but everything seems fine. Compared to Blue Wilderness, Merrick’s Backcountry feels higher in protein, and the ingredients list looks cleaner. I’m curious if anyone else has noticed the difference between the dry vs. wet raw-infused formulas.

ParticipantMy indoor cat has been loving Merrick Backcountry Wet Cat Food, especially the rabbit pouches. I tried mixing in a little freeze-dried chicken mixer to keep meals interesting. I’ve rotated between Kirkland Signature and Nature’s Domain in the past, but she seems more consistent with Backcountry. Her coat is shinier, energy levels are up, and digestion seems normal. I also checked Merrick Backcountry Cat Food ingredients, and I like that it’s grain-free and high-protein. Availability has been okay at Chewy and PetSmart, but I did see a few posts online about shortages or discontinued flavors.

ParticipantI gave my senior cat Merrick Backcountry Raw-Infused Dry Cat Food in the game bird flavor. She’s usually picky with dry food, but she’s eating this without hesitation. I also tried the grain-free pouches, and she seems to prefer those sometimes. Compared to Nutra Nuggets and Pure Cravings, the Backcountry formulas are more protein-rich. I noticed a small increase in her energy and her coat is softer. I’ve been monitoring phosphorus levels since she has a history of kidney sensitivity, and everything seems fine so far. Walmart and Chewy both still stock it.

ParticipantMy kittens tried Merrick Backcountry Wet Cat Food for the first time last week. They love the rabbit and game bird flavors, and I love that the pouches are convenient for portion control. I’ve rotated it with Nature’s Domain and Nutra Nuggets to give them variety. Their energy levels have improved, and digestion seems smooth. I also picked up the grain-free freeze-dried chicken mixer, which they scarf down. I’ve read some concerns online about Merrick Backcountry Cat Food being discontinued, but I’m still able to buy it locally without trouble.

ParticipantI’ve been feeding Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Raw-Infused Dry Cat Food to my indoor cats. They usually turn up their noses at other brands like Kirkland Signature, but they eat this one consistently. I’ve also tried the wet pouches, and they love the texture and flavor. The ingredients seem high-quality and protein-focused, which is great. I haven’t noticed any digestive issues or stomach upset. I did a little research on Merrick Backcountry Cat Food phosphorus levels and it seems safe for my adult cats. Chewy and PetSmart have good availability, though I’ve seen a few warnings about possible shortages.

ParticipantMy picky eater absolutely loves the Merrick Backcountry Grain-Free Rabbit Cat Food. I’ve tried both the raw-infused dry and the wet pouches, and she finishes both with enthusiasm. Her coat is shinier, energy levels are up, and digestion seems normal. I also noticed that the pouches are really convenient for small portions. I picked them up at Chewy, but PetSmart and Walmart also carry them, sometimes with coupons.
