ParticipantBeen seeing Authority at PetSmart and noticed it’s their store brand. Usually skeptical of store brands but the ingredients don’t look terrible and price is decent.
Is Authority legitimate quality or typical cheap store brand with nice packaging? Does being exclusive to PetSmart mean something about quality or just marketing strategy?
Anyone feed Authority regularly? Does it work as well as name brands costing more?
Honest opinions appreciated.

ParticipantUsing Authority for almost two years now and honestly surprised by how well it performs given the lower price. My cat maintains healthy weight, decent coat condition, and good energy on it. Digestion works fine without issues. The grain-free formulas provide quality protein sources at prices significantly below premium brands. Costs around $1.90 per pound which is excellent value. Not fancy or trendy but delivers solid everyday nutrition. My vet hasn’t raised concerns during regular checkups. Sometimes store brands offer legitimate quality at better prices.

ParticipantTried Authority Indoor formula and my cat developed persistent soft stools after about ten days. Switched back to previous food and digestion normalized within few days. Could have been coincidence or adjustment period, but the timing suggested the food change caused it. Quality might work for some cats but didn’t suit her digestive system. Hit or miss like many foods.

ParticipantStore brands make me nervous generally. Usually lower quality with fancy packaging to compete with name brands. But ingredients on Authority look surprisingly decent for the price. Maybe PetSmart actually invested in quality formulation rather than just slapping their name on cheap food. Tempted to try since it’s significantly cheaper than what I’m currently buying. Worst case, my cat rejects it and I’m out twenty dollars.

ParticipantStore brands from major retailers often use reputable manufacturers producing private label versions. Authority formulas meet AAFCO standards for nutritional adequacy. The lower pricing comes from reduced marketing costs and PetSmart’s purchasing power rather than necessarily inferior ingredients. For healthy cats without special dietary needs, store brands can provide adequate nutrition at better value. Quality control from established retailer means reasonable oversight. Not ultra-premium but functional everyday food.

ParticipantCOST COMPARISON:
Authority: $1.70-$2.20 per pound
American Journey: $2.20-$2.80 per pound
Blue Buffalo: $2.50-$3.00 per pound
Wellness: $2.60-$3.20 per pound
Fancy Feast: $1.20-$1.60 per poundAuthority prices below mid-premium brands but above basic grocery store food. The value proposition works if quality matches claims. For budget-conscious households wanting better than grocery brands without premium pricing, Authority occupies useful middle ground.

ParticipantExclusive to PetSmart means less convenient if you prefer shopping multiple retailers or online. Being locked into one store for food purchases feels restrictive. However, PetSmart stores are common enough that availability isn’t usually problematic. Just something to consider regarding shopping flexibility.

ParticipantThe grain free options provide variety without extreme pricing. My cat does fine on grain-free formulas and Authority offers those at accessible cost. Not every budget allows $3+ per pound food but grain-free at $2 per pound makes that dietary choice more feasible for regular households.

ParticipantFormula variety available:
Indoor: Lower calorie for less active cats
Grain-free varieties: Chicken, salmon, turkey options
Weight management: Calorie-controlled formula
Sensitive stomach: Easier digestion focusAdequate selection covering common needs. Nothing exotic but handles typical requirements. I use their grain-free chicken as primary food with occasional salmon for variety.

ParticipantAUTHORITY VS AMERICAN JOURNEY (store brand comparison)
Both are retailer exclusives:
Authority advantages:
Available in physical PetSmart stores
Slightly lower pricing overall
Can see/purchase immediately in-store
No shipping wait timesAmerican Journey advantages:
Chewy exclusive with convenient delivery
Slightly higher perceived quality
Better online reviews generally
Auto-ship options available
More formula varietyMy take: Authority for in-store shopping convenience. American Journey for online ordering preference. Both offer decent quality at accessible prices. Choice depends on shopping habits more than significant quality differences.

ParticipantFor multi-cat households managing tight budgets, Authority makes feeding several cats more financially sustainable. I have three cats and switching to Authority saved roughly $75 monthly. All three transitioned fine and maintain healthy condition. When feeding multiple animals, cost per pound matters significantly.

ParticipantNearly two years feeding Authority and experience has been consistently acceptable. My cat maintains healthy condition without issues. Coat looks decent, digestion works properly, energy appropriate for her lifestyle. The store brand label initially made me skeptical but actual results proved it provides adequate nutrition.
Significant cost savings compared to premium brands matter for household budget. Not every cat needs ultra-premium food if mid-range options meet their nutritional needs. Authority delivers functional everyday nutrition without excessive cost. The exclusive PetSmart availability hasn’t been problematic since stores are readily accessible.
For cats without special dietary requirements and owners managing budgets, Authority represents practical choice. Results show healthy cats can thrive on well-formulated mid-range food regardless of fancy branding. Worth considering if cost consciousness matters while maintaining decent quality standards.

ParticipantI’ve been feeding my cats the Authority grain free dry cat food for a few months, and honestly, they love it. My picky eater actually finishes her bowl every time. I like that it has real chicken and no artificial stuff. It’s also easy on their tummies, especially compared to some other brands. The Authority indoor cat food version also helps with hairballs a bit. For the price at PetSmart, it feels like a good balance between quality and affordability. Anyone else notice shinier coats after switching?

ParticipantMy senior cat has been on Authority senior cat food for almost a year. I can tell the difference more energy, softer fur, and fewer digestive issues. It’s nice that the brand has different options like Authority sensitive support and Authority grain free adult cat food because every cat’s needs are so different. I tried switching once, and he flat-out refused to eat anything else. So, we’re sticking to Authority for now. PetSmart always has it in stock, which makes life easier for me!

ParticipantI’ve used the Authority wet cat food for my two boys, and they seem obsessed with it. It’s got a meaty texture that smells like actual chicken or salmon, not weird mystery paste. I like mixing it with Authority cat dry food sometimes so they get both crunch and moisture. I feel like this combo keeps them hydrated and happy. If anyone’s cat has been avoiding water, try the wet version it makes a big difference. Bonus: fewer hairballs and shinier coats!
