    Hey everyone,

Been researching Open Farm and their whole transparency thing is interesting. They show you exactly where ingredients come from and claim everything is ethically sourced and humanely raised.

Sounds great in theory but the price tag is pretty steep. Is the ethical sourcing actually legitimate or mostly marketing? Does the food quality match the premium cost?

Would love to hear from people who actually feed Open Farm. Does your cat like it? Can you really tell a difference?

    Thanks.🌾🐱

We switched to Open Farm about seven months back and haven’t looked back. What sold me initially was their ingredient transparency – you can literally trace where the chicken or fish comes from on their website. My cat’s health has been excellent on it. Her coat developed this incredible softness and shine that wasn’t there before.

Digestion has been consistently good with no upset. The ethical sourcing matters to me personally since I care about animal welfare and environmental impact. Yes it costs more (roughly $4 per pound for dry food) but knowing the animals were humanely raised and the fish is sustainably caught makes the premium worthwhile for our household.

Bought a bag of their chicken formula and my cat ate it for maybe four days before losing interest completely. He just started leaving more and more in his bowl until he was barely touching it. Tried their fish recipe thinking different protein might help but same gradual rejection happened. Quality seemed fine, ingredients looked good, but taste apparently didn’t appeal to him long term. Pretty expensive experiment that didn’t work out for us.

From a nutritional standpoint, Open Farm formulas are well-balanced with quality protein sources and appropriate fat levels. The ethical sourcing doesn’t make it nutritionally superior to other premium brands necessarily, but it addresses production ethics that matter to many pet owners.

Humanely raised animals and sustainable fishing practices benefit animal welfare and environmental health beyond just pet nutrition. The ingredient transparency is legitimate they provide actual farm locations and fishing details. Whether that’s worth the premium depends on individual values alongside nutritional adequacy. The food itself is solid; the ethics are the differentiating factor.

    COST REALITY:

Open Farm dry food: $3.80-$4.50 per pound
Open Farm wet food: $2.80-$3.40 per can
Similar premium brands: $3.00-$4.00 per pound typically
Ultra-premium like Orijen: $4.50-$5.50 per pound

Open Farm sits at the higher end of premium pricing but below ultra-premium. You’re paying for ethical sourcing verification and supply chain transparency alongside nutrition. For comparison, conventional premium brands without ethical certification cost $0.80-$1.20 less per pound. Whether that difference matters depends on how much you value the sourcing practices behind the food.

The packaging provides more information than typical pet food. Each bag lists specific farms or fisheries that supplied ingredients for that batch. Scanning the QR code shows you photos and details about the sourcing.

First time I’ve seen that level of transparency in any pet food brand. Makes you realize how little information most companies provide about where ingredients actually originate. Feels more trustworthy when they’re willing to be that open.

My cat has chicken allergies so I use their Wild-Caught Salmon exclusively. The fish is certified sustainable which matters since ocean health is already precarious. Her allergic symptoms (excessive grooming, skin irritation) have been completely controlled on this formula. Finding high-quality fish-based food without chicken or poultry by-products can be challenging. Open Farm’s single-protein options work perfectly for cats with specific protein sensitivities.

OPEN FARM VS WELLNESS CORE (premium comparison)

    Both premium brands, different focuses:

    Open Farm advantages:

    Verified ethical and sustainable sourcing
    Complete supply chain transparency
    Humane animal raising practices documented
    Environmental responsibility emphasis
    Ingredient traceability per batch

    Wellness CORE advantages:

    Lower price point overall
    Wider availability in stores
    More formula variety
    Established track record
    Easier to find on sale

My perspective: Open Farm for ethics-focused consumers willing to pay for verified sourcing. Wellness CORE for quality nutrition at lower cost without ethical certification. Both nutritionally adequate. Decision hinges on whether ethical sourcing matters enough to justify price difference for your household.

For people concerned about antibiotic use in livestock, Open Farm avoids antibiotics in their animal sourcing. Given rising antibiotic resistance concerns in human medicine, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use in food animals makes sense. Their animals are raised without preventive antibiotics or growth hormones. That level of careful sourcing reduces contributing to broader public health issues while feeding your cat quality protein.

The sustainable fishing certification on their seafood formulas is legitimate certified by Ocean Wise or Marine Stewardship Council depending on the fish. Industrial fishing practices have devastated fish populations globally. Supporting sustainable fishing through purchasing choices helps protect ocean ecosystems. My cat gets quality nutrition while I contribute to better fishing practices. Win-win situation if you care about environmental issues.

Combination feeding works well with Open Farm. I use their dry food for free-feeding and add their wet food as dinner topper. Both formulas complement each other nutritionally. The wet food has nice texture – not too thick or watery – and my cat finds it very palatable. Using both together provides hydration from wet food and dental benefits from dry kibble.

Their customer service actually responds to questions about sourcing specifics. Asked about antibiotic policies and got detailed response within two days. Transparency extends beyond just packaging they seem genuinely committed to openness about their practices. That responsiveness builds trust compared to companies that provide generic corporate responses or ignore inquiries entirely.

Eight months with Open Farm and our experience has been consistently positive. My cat maintains excellent health with good digestion, appropriate energy, and beautiful coat condition. Beyond standard health metrics, I appreciate knowing the food aligns with values I care about regarding animal welfare and environmental responsibility. Factory farming and unsustainable fishing are real problems that pet food industry contributes to significantly. Open Farm represents an alternative approach where ingredient sourcing considers ethics alongside nutrition.

The premium pricing reflects actual costs of humane animal raising and sustainable harvesting rather than just marketing markup. For our household, spending extra for food that doesn’t contribute to animal suffering or environmental degradation feels right. My cat gets quality nutrition while I support practices that align with my values. Not everyone prioritizes these factors equally and that’s fine. Conventional premium foods provide adequate nutrition at lower cost. But if ethical sourcing matters to you beyond just ingredient quality, Open Farm delivers genuine transparency and verification rather than empty claims. Worth considering if your values align with their mission.

I’ve been feeding Open Farm Grain Free Dry Cat Food to my indoor cats, and it’s been great. Appetite is strong, digestion is smooth, and litter box issues are minimal. Mixing a little wet Open Farm for hydration works perfectly. Coats are shinier, energy levels are up, and hairballs are fewer. Portioning is easy, and even picky cats finish happily. I love that the ingredients are ethically sourced and natural, making me feel confident in feeding a premium, high quality product. Definitely worth trying if you’re looking for a better dry food option.
