I feed my senior cat Redford Naturals healthy weight cat food, mainly the grain-free chicken and turkey options. Ingredients in Redford Naturals cat food are high-quality, and digestion seems easier on her. Hairball issues have reduced, and she’s maintaining a healthy weight. I mix in Nature’s Domain wet cat food occasionally. Amazon is my main source, though Chewy has Redford Naturals cat food coupons sometimes. Price is higher than Nutra Nuggets, but health improvements, energy, and coat shine make it worthwhile. Definitely a premium alternative to grocery brands and even Royal Canin for sensitive cats.
I feed my Bengal cats Blackwood indoor cat food, mainly the chicken meal & rice recipe. Ingredients in Blackwood cat food seem clean, and it’s cruelty-free too. Their energy and coat shine have improved since switching from standard grocery brands. I occasionally mix in some Pure Cravings wet cat food. Amazon and Lazada have been reliable sources for me, sometimes with coupons. Bowls are always empty, which is a good sign! The Blackwood cat food lean senior formulas also look promising for older cats. Definitely feels like a premium option compared to Royal Canin.
My two senior cats are thriving on Against the Grain wet food. They especially love Mango Tango, and their energy levels are up! I appreciate that it’s grain-free and high in protein my cats stay full longer. I used to use Nature’s Domain, but this brand feels more natural. The cans smell like real chicken instead of that processed odor. I read online that it’s made in the USA, which explains the quality. I just wish Against the Grain cat food was easier to find locally.
DRY FOOD LONG-TERM EXPERIENCE – Eight Years
My extended kibble feeding journey:
Years 1-3: Fed premium dry food exclusively with automatic water fountain. My cat Oscar maintained healthy weight, acceptable coat, adequate energy. Vet checkups showed normal ranges. He drank water regularly throughout day. Health adequate overall.
Years 4-5: Continued dry food feeding. Around year 4 he developed urinary crystals requiring prescription diet temporarily. Vet mentioned wet food would help but prescription kibble resolved issue. Crystals never returned after formula change.
Years 6-7: Switched to mixing some wet food with dry food after crystal incident. His hydration improved noticeably – more dilute urine. Coat seemed slightly shinier. Energy good. The combination worked well.
Year 8: Now feeding 70% dry, 30% wet food. He maintains excellent health with this approach. Perfect weight, healthy coat, great energy, no urinary issues. The mixed feeding provides convenience with moisture benefits.
Assessment: Quality dry food can work but adding wet food improved hydration and overall condition. Mixed feeding provides best of both approaches.
